I was able to go to a screening so I could share this Venom: Let There Be Carnage parents guide. All opinions are my own.
Tom Hardy (as Eddie/Venom) was freaking amazing in the first Venom movie. If you have seen that movie, then you know what I am talking about. He, along with Michelle Williams (as Anne Weying) was perfect and did a great job of laying out the background of what I hope to be a long-running line of Venom movies. That being said, watch the first one before you go see this one. It isn’t do or die – but things will make a lot more sense and you will enjoy the movie that much more. I am hoping to see Venom in a Marvel movie with other Marvel characters (like Spiderman) sometime soon like it is in the comics.
In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, we get to jump straight into another fantastic storyline. This one is dealing with Cletus Kasady (played by a very talented Woody Harrelson) who is all sorts of crazy. We get a good background on him and a couple of other key players in this movie. I don’t like to give spoilers so I am not going to lay out the details of the movie, but trust me when I say, this movie is super intense and freaking amazing.
REVIEW
There is a lot of banter between Venom and Eddie that really helps develop the characters and gives us a better look and what the day in and day out of being “Venom” really is. Tom Hardy is phenomenal. He brings through every emotion, every feeling, and really pulls you into the movie. Opposite of him in this movie is Woody Harrelson. Woody just blew my mind. He plays Cassidy so well. I am saying this in the highest respect, he totally creeped me out.
Naomie Harris also did a great job of being creepy in her role of Shriek (aka Frances Barrison). While her role in this is very different from what you may have ready in the comics, I feel like they did a great job with her character.
The film is directed by Andy Serkis (who you know best as Gollum from Lord of the Rings). He did so well at bringing everything together and making sure the story flowed and made sense. The special effects are so flipping good. Everything about it is so good. Absolutely fantastic job on this movie!
This movie is a lot darker than the first Venom. There is a lot more violence, disturbing content and the storyline is creepy. Read our Venom: Let There Be Carnage parents guide below to determine what you think is best for your kids. I would say a strong 13 and older but if your kids have seen movies like this before, then they will probably be ok. If you aren’t sure, screen it first and see what you think.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage Parents Guide
The movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some strong language, disturbing material, and suggestive references
It runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
There is an important VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE END CREDIT SCENES! Be sure to stay and watch it.
Sex & Nudity – A little bit of kissing. A cartoon drawing of a naked lady in the bathtub (shows breasts briefly and the bum).
Violence & Gore – Pretty much the whole movie is violence and gore. Anytime Carnage is on screen and part of the time when Venom is on the screen you can pretty much bet on it. They did a great job of keeping from being really graphic. (It could have been a LOT worse).
Profanity – language used throughout. 1 F* word. At least one use of G-Dam**. A few Ass, Shit, Hell, Damn, and SOB as well as Bit**. There is also a shot of Venom flipping the bird.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – Some drinking but definitely not prominent or a theme in the movie.
Frightening & Intense Scenes – There are several frightening scenes that would scare younger viewers. When Carnage transforms is pretty intense and frightening. That’s just one of many scenes.
While they did scale back on what could have been a very rated R film, I feel like they pushed the limits of the PG-13 rating. The movie is only 90 minutes long so they pack a lot into that time frame. You will have a lot to process and be left with some loose ends when the movie is over – but the good news is – STAY FOR THE CREDITS!
