We just got back from an amazing vacation to Orlando Florida where we spent 5 days at the Universal Orlando Resort. Between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, and my kids are in full Harry Potter mode. It has been fun talking about all of our favorite things that we enjoyed there (like the Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice) so we decided to make some fun Harry Potter treats of our own to share with you.
Harry Potter Golden Snitch Cupcakes
One of our favorite things is the Quidditch matches and the golden snitch, so we decided to make Harry Potter Golden Snitch Cupcakes. It was fun to make the golden snitch and the cupcakes. We also love the fabulous Harry Potter Hermione Costume that we got from Oriental Trading. We can’t wait to share it all with you today! These are perfect for Harry Potter parties, Halloween, school treats or just because. Let’s face it, is there a bad time to have cupcakes and dress up in your favorite houses colors? 😉
To make these Golden Snitch Cupcakes, you are going to need the following:
- Table tennis balls
- Feathers
- A drill with a small drill bit or a sharp screwdriver
- A low-temp glue gun
- Gold spray paint
- Cake mix (or ingredients to make cupcakes)
- Frosting (or ingredients to make frosting)
- Cupcake liners
To start, we are going to make the cupcakes, so they can be cooling while we make the Golden Snitches. So make them according to package directions (or use your favorite cupcake recipe). While they are baking, you can get the ping pong balls out and get the holes drilled for the feathers. To do this, you will take a ping pong ball, and drill two holes – across from each other – in out the areas shown in the picture below. I made a hole in the bottom first so that I could go through that from the inside out to make the other two holes, and also to put it on a skewer while we are spray painting and also to hold them up on the cupcake.
Once all of the holes are drilled (and you have pulled the cupcakes out and have them on a cooling rack) you will want to get the low-temp hot glue gun plugged in and heating up so we can add the designs and feathers to our snitch. Take the glue gun and attach the two feathers. The feathers will go into the ball, then you will glue around the hole to secure it into place. Then you will take the glue gun and slowly make the pattern. We did ours similar the pictures we found.
Once all the glue dries, put it on a skewer stick and spray paint it Gold. Don’t over spray of it will run or drip. Below, you can see a picture of the pattern we used based on the original golden snitch from Harry Potter. My kids had fun doing this, trying to match it as closely as possible.
With your snitch done and painted gold, you will need to let them dry for about 20-30 minutes. While they are drying, you can make your frosting (or get the pre-made frosting ready). We used a chocolate cupcake and the coconut pecan frosting for German Chocolate cupcakes. You can make it whatever color/flavor you want – making different colored ones for the different houses.
Spray Paint the Golden Snitch Gold
Once you have your frosting mixed, you will want to put it onto the cupcakes. I love my frosting piping set I got on Amazon. It works great and has three different sizes of bags (in case you want to do more than one color) and it has a variety of tips. After making sure the golden snitches that we made earlier are completely dry, you will want to add them to the top of the cupcakes. Keep the skewer stick in it so that it isn’t touching the cupcakes – that way you don’t have to worry about the paint touching the frosting. Ours got bumped down into the frosting – so we scrapped a little of the frosting off just to make sure.
You will love making these with your kids – especially because they will have their own Golden Snitch when they are done eating their cupcakes. With school just back in – it would be fun to make these and surprise your kids with them when they get home. These are a must-have at your next party. Weren’t you worried about the residue from spray paint getting in your food?
Coralie says
Hi Nikki,
We were. That is why I suggest you use skewer sticks to keep them up off of the cupcakes and why we scraped the frosting off that they touched before my kids ate them. We also waited until they were completely dry before putting them on the cupcakes. HTH.
Thanks

This is a very good idea! The cupcakes look very cute. But it will be better if you use gold coloring food to avoid the toxic from the paint.
