I wrote this Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Parents Guide to help you know what is in the movie. All opinions are my own.

Since I was a young child when the first Beetlejuice movie came out I don’t remember seeing it. I LOVED the cartoon and watched that every day. But it wasn’t until later on that I watched the movie Beetlejuice for the first time. Other than the crude content of the movie, it was overall pretty good. I just rewatched it earlier this week so I could have it fresh on my mind before I went and saw the second one. I am so glad I did. A lot of the second one has to do with the information you get in the first one. You will be lost if you don’t watch Beetlejuice first. (you can get it here).

As I review my notes and what I remember of the two movies, here are the more important things to point out:

The backgrounds of Lydia and Beetlejuice are talked about more as well as their current lives and what they have been doing for the last 35+ years.
As far as sets, the structure of the film, and the whole Tim Burton feel of it – it’s all still there. They didn’t CGI or digitalize anything that shouldn’t have been.
Michael Keaton did just as good of a job (if not better) this go around in his role of Beetlejuice. I felt like you get to see him as a “person” and not just some pervert who likes to scare the hell out of everyone.
Several things are similar to the original (as a nod) and I loved it.

While there were a lot of great things I liked about the movie, here are some things I wasn’t overly fond of:

There is just as much language (maybe more) as the original and most of it is from Astrid (Jenna Ortega) (Yes – 2 F words – 1 spoken and 1 written).
It is just as crude as the first one (and by more characters than just Beetlejuice)
There are more gore and frightening elements in this movie. Especially baby Beetlejuice (it’s like Chucky in Beetlejuice makeup).
There is a big build-up and storyline and it kind of fizzled without a big climax.

With all that being said, there were kids of all ages at the screening and I didn’t see anyone leaving crying – but that doesn’t mean they didn’t pick up a thing or two or have a nightmare. If your kids are sensitive to horror – I would watch it first to get an idea of what you’re dealing with.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is rated PG-13 for violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive material and brief drug use. It runs for 1hr 44m.

There are no end-credit scenes for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Sex & Nudity & Innuendos – 3/5 – Several innuendos and comments. A nude statue of a woman. Words like mating, do it, horny, carnal pleasure. There is a love scene that is talked about and has sounds but only the shadows are shown – it’s enough to make you uncomfortable. There is also a childbirth scene that is weird. Nothing is shown that’s inappropriate.

Violence & Gore – 3/5 – A lady who is cut into pieces staples herself back together. Souls are sucked out of people leaving them a “pile of skin” but this looks a little comical. In the afterlife, it shows people the way they died. This includes disembodied, grotesque scenes (like cats eating their owner, fish-eating flesh, etc). There are also two characters where one was stabbed in the eye with a kitchen tool and the other’s head was chopped almost in half with a blade. There is a baby Beetlejuice that is very violent. He has sharp teeth and likes eating human flesh (kills people and tries eating legs) completely reminds me of the movie (Chucky). Shows guts (large grey worm-looking things) spilling out of a body.

Profanity – 2/5 – 1+ use of Jesus. 6+ uses of God, OMG, GD. 8+ uses of shit and variations. 4+ uses of hell. 1+ use of ass. 2 uses of F – one very prominent F’er and another written on a card that is shown on a phone (could be missed).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 2/5 – Shows drinking several times, Coffee is prominent with one of the characters.

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 3/5 – Anything with the baby is frightening (but not gripping my seat scared – just gross). There really isn’t an “intense” feel to the movie. But there are several scenes that are meant to be frightening. There are a couple of jump scares as well.

Other things to note – Monica Bellucci who plays Delores and Willem Dafoe who plays Wolf Jackson both did a great job in their roles. It was a lot of fun to see them adapt and take it on as their own. Overall the movie is good and I think they did a great job with the new storyline and the Beetlejuice feel of the overall movie.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a step up from the classic Tim Burton movies. Several gory scenes might turn your stomach. There are a few frightening scenes. This movie is like the original Beetlejuice movie and Chucky “had a baby” literally! (haha)
